The Opus Lumière experience

How we work

Opus Lumière is two people.

Joy is the one behind the camera, quick and instinctive – “so creative”, as one client put it. Annie is the one who sees the picture before it exists: the theme, your outfits, the set-up and every pose, so that it is exactly as you imagined. Both of us are at every shoot. Because one of us is always directing, you are never left to pose yourself — Annie talks you through each frame while Joy works quickly around you, so even if you have “never been good in front of a camera”, you don’t have to be.

What we believe. A photograph should still look right in twenty years, which is why we light with care, pose gently and never chase a trend. A session should feel like an unhurried morning, which is why every shoot follows the same five steps – the FOCUS Method – from the first phone call to the finished gallery. And a family’s pictures belong together — more on that just below.

Opus Lumière are fine-art photographers, Joy and Annie – Joy behind the camera, Annie directing – photographing maternity, newborn, family, couples and model portraits across London for more than ten years, from a professional London hire studio, on location and at home.

Watch the five steps in under two minutes, with the two of us at work.

How it started

A photographer and a painter

Joy is a photographer and Annie is a painter, both artists at heart. We started photographing together after we married, and the two halves fit: Annie plans each picture as she would a canvas, from the colours and the setting to the pose, and Joy catches it the moment it happens.

The Growing Gallery began with our own photographs. Over the years we had taken thousands and could never find the ones we wanted, so for our clients we built what we never had: their pictures in one place, easy to open and easy to share with family and friends. And because so many clients ask for black and white, it comes with a pair of black-and-white glasses, so the whole gallery can be seen both ways at the tap of a button.

A decade behind the camera

Our experience

For more than ten years we have photographed together, across maternity, newborn, family, couples and model portfolios.

That length of time is the quiet part of the work. We have met the newborn who will only settle on her mother, the toddler who needs ten minutes before he’ll look up, and the parents who arrive certain they are “not photogenic”. We have learned to read a room and wait for the moment rather than stage it — which is why the pictures come back looking like you on a good day, not like a performance.

Something no other photographer offers

The Growing Gallery

Most photographs end up in a folder. Ours hang. Every session of two hours or more comes with a private, password-protected 3D gallery your family can walk through – and because families come back to us for the newborn session, the first birthday, the next pregnancy, every shoot adds a floor rather than starting again. It is free for two years and, as far as we’re aware, no other photographer in the world offers it. See how it grows →

How the work is made

Kit & craft

Every session is photographed on high-end digital cameras — both DSLR and mirrorless — with some of the best lenses available, and full studio lighting: flashes, reflectors, softboxes and more. We edit every image by hand, ourselves — never outsourced, never left to a filter — and deliver the finished set in a private, password-protected online gallery you can download from and share. Galleries arrive within two to four weeks of you selecting your photos.

What we believe

The Opus Lumière approach

We never chase a trend

A photograph should still look right in twenty years, so we light with care and pose gently.

An unhurried morning

A session should feel like one, so every shoot follows the same five steps: the FOCUS Method.

Your pictures belong together

Every shoot of two hours or more adds a floor to the same gallery, from bump to first birthday.
