London maternity photography

Your London maternity photographer

Choosing a maternity photographer in London is one of the loveliest decisions of your pregnancy, and it’s one we treat with care. Every session is built around you - your story, your body, your style - first baby or third. Our promise is simple: timeless, fine-art portraits made with editorial polish and real warmth, to keep long after these weeks have passed.

If you’ve never been in front of a camera, the idea can feel daunting. It needn’t be. We direct you gently through every pose so the experience stays calm and genuinely enjoyable - relaxed enough that older children are welcome to join. You’ll leave with images that look like you at your most radiant: natural, unforced and real.

Pregnancy photography in London, your way

From soft studio light to London’s parks, rooftops and riverside backdrops, we tailor every pregnancy photoshoot to suit you and shape it around your comfort. Clients choose us for natural, emotive images full of authentic moments - not stiff, posed pictures - and leave with timeless portraits to share with family and keep for life.

Planning ahead

Planning your London maternity photoshoot

A maternity photoshoot captures a very special time in your journey into motherhood - memories you will return to for years. A little planning makes it effortless. Here is how we help you prepare, from choosing the right week, to deciding what to wear, to displaying your finished pictures.

The best time for your maternity shoot

Most mums book their maternity shoot between 28 and 36 weeks, when your bump is beautifully round but you are still comfortable on your feet. If you are expecting twins or tend to deliver early, we will happily schedule your pregnancy photoshoot a little sooner. Not sure? Tell us your due date and we will suggest the ideal window. For outdoor sessions, the golden hour just after sunrise or before sunset gives the softest, most flattering light, and classic London parks look beautiful then, with seasonal foliage and open skies. We also pose and direct you from gently elevated angles that flatter your bump and create timeless, editorial perspectives.

What to wear

Fitted dresses and flowing fabrics photograph beautifully and help you feel confident and comfortable - bring a few favourite outfits and we will help you choose what works best on the day.

Prints, albums and wall art

Your maternity pictures deserve more than a phone screen. Every photo session can become a set of fine art prints, a hand-bound album, framed wall art for the nursery, or a folio of professional maternity photos for grandparents. For more inspiration, browse our recent maternity sessions. We hand-finish each piece so your maternity photos and pregnancy photos become heirloom artwork to treasure forever.

Where we work

Where we photograph across London

We work from a hire studio in Hackney Central and travel across the capital for outdoor and at-home sessions. These are the areas we photograph most often, and the settings we tend to suggest in each. If you are somewhere not listed, ask - we almost certainly cover it.

Maternity photography in North London

Primrose Hill at golden hour, the long grass on Hampstead Heath, the terraces at Alexandra Palace and the formal paths of Regent’s Park. Parents in Islington, Highgate, Crouch End and Muswell Hill usually want a North London maternity photographer who can shoot outdoors and still keep the session unhurried - all four of those locations allow it.

Maternity photography in East London

If you are searching for maternity photography, East London is where we are based and where we shoot most. The hire studio we work from is in Hackney Central, with Victoria Park nearby for sessions that move outdoors. We photograph regularly across Hackney, Shoreditch, Bow, Stratford and Walthamstow, and an at-home session here rarely needs more than one well-lit room.

Maternity photography in South and South-East London

Greenwich Park puts the city skyline behind you. Crystal Palace and Dulwich Park are quieter, and better if you would rather not be watched while you are photographed. We travel to Blackheath, Peckham, Clapham and Battersea, and Battersea Park gives you water and old trees without leaving zone 2.

Maternity photography in West London

Kensington Gardens and Hyde Park suit classic, soft-light portraits; Richmond Park suits anyone who wants space and deer on the horizon. We photograph parents in Chiswick, Ealing, Fulham, Putney and Wimbledon, usually early in the morning before the parks fill up.

Why us

Why London parents choose Opus Lumière

Behind every Opus Lumière maternity photoshoot are two photographers, Joy and Annie, who have spent years helping expecting parents feel at ease in front of the camera. We are a boutique maternity photographer London studio rather than a high-volume chain, so your session is never rushed and never formulaic. From your very first message to the moment you hold your finished maternity photos, you work with the same two familiar faces who know your story.

Our approach to maternity photography London is unashamedly fine-art. We light each frame with care, direct you gently and warmly, and edit by hand, so your pregnancy photos look refined rather than filtered. Many clients arrive a little nervous and leave saying it was the most relaxed shoot they have ever done, with professional maternity photos they are genuinely proud to frame and hang on the wall.

One studio, countless London settings

We photograph maternity sessions in the private London studio and on location wherever feels most like you, from leafy west London streets to the river and the city best-loved landmarks. If you would rather not travel, we can bring the studio to your home. Whatever you choose, a maternity shoot with us is calm, considered and shaped entirely around your comfort, your style and the season you are in.

Pregnancy photography that grows with your family

Because we offer the pregnancy photography London families search for alongside the wider portrait work that follows, your maternity pictures can become the first chapter of a collection you build over the years. Book your maternity photoshoot London session early to secure your preferred date, and we will guide you through every step, from styling and timing to choosing the pregnancy photos you will treasure most.

Good to know

Maternity photography FAQ

What should I wear?

We’ll advise you personally ahead of the shoot - as a rule, fitted styles and flowing fabrics both photograph beautifully, and we’ll bring a few options together for your bump and setting.

Can I bring my partner or children?

Absolutely - and we’d encourage it. Couples and family maternity sessions capture connection a solo shoot simply can’t.

Studio or outdoor - which is right for me?

Studio offers controlled light and privacy; outdoor brings natural light and iconic London settings. Many clients choose a hybrid of both.

Do you offer newborn photography too?

Yes - many clients book maternity and newborn together for a seamless story from bump to baby, at a combined rate. Get in touch and we’ll put a package together for you.

What happens during a maternity photoshoot?

A relaxed, guided experience from start to finish. We create a calm, welcoming atmosphere, direct every pose and capture the moments in between - most clients say it’s far more enjoyable than they expected.

What if I need to reschedule?

Pregnancy is unpredictable, so any medical or pregnancy-related change is given priority rebooking, and we’ll always do our best to accommodate you. For studio sessions, a rebooking fee may apply.

Will my maternity photos look professional?

Yes. We light, direct and retouch every frame, so your maternity photos look polished yet natural - never over-edited.

Is a maternity photoshoot worth it for a first baby?

Absolutely. A maternity photoshoot marks the start of a whole new chapter, and whether it is your first child or a new baby joining older siblings, it is once in a lifetime. These are the only weeks you will carry this new life, and a pregnancy photoshoot lets you hold onto them.

How do I book a maternity photographer in London?

Simply get in touch through our contact page to check dates. We will arrange a relaxed consultation, answer your questions, and reserve your maternity photoshoot London date - usually planned a few weeks ahead of your shoot.

How do I choose the best maternity photographer in London?

Look at complete galleries rather than single images - anyone can produce one good frame. Check that the photographer shoots maternity regularly rather than occasionally, ask who will actually be there on the day, and make sure the price you are quoted includes the edited photographs rather than treating them as an extra. We are two photographers, Joy and Annie, and the person you speak to is the person who photographs you.

Is a pregnancy shoot in London different from a maternity shoot?

No - they are two names for the same thing. Some parents search for a pregnancy photoshoot, some for a maternity photoshoot, and a few for a bump photoshoot. The session, the timing and the pregnancy photography prices are identical whichever term you use.
