When to Book a Newborn Photographer
When to book, when to shoot, and what happens when your baby has other plans - capturing your baby’s first, fleeting days.

Newborn photography is the one booking where the date you want is not a date you can pick. You are reserving a window around an event nobody controls, and the studios that are any good are usually full weeks ahead. The short answer is to book during pregnancy and photograph at about five to fourteen days old. The rest of this page explains why, and what happens when it does not go to plan.

When should I book a newborn photographer?
During pregnancy - ideally in the second or third trimester. You reserve a flexible window around your due date rather than a fixed date, and confirm once your baby has arrived.
When is the best time to photograph a newborn?
Between about 5 and 14 days old. Babies sleep most deeply in that window and curl naturally, which is what makes the calm, sleeping photographs possible.
Is it too late if my baby is already three weeks old?
No. The session changes character rather than becoming impossible - more awake, more parent-and-baby, less posed sleeping. Many families prefer those photographs.
What if my baby arrives early or late?
That is expected. We hold a tentative date around your due date and move it once your baby is here.
How far ahead do newborn photographers get booked?
Several weeks is normal, and more around busy periods. Booking early costs nothing and protects the window.
Can I book after the birth?
Yes, and we fit families in when we can. It is simply harder to guarantee the ideal window at short notice.
The short answer
Book during pregnancy, photograph in the first fortnight
The two dates are separate and it helps to think of them separately. The booking happens months in advance, while you have the time and headspace to choose a photographer properly. The session happens in a narrow window a few days after your baby arrives, which is a period you will not want to be organising anything in.
Most families we photograph get in touch somewhere in the second or third trimester. That is early enough to hold the window comfortably and late enough that the pregnancy feels real rather than theoretical.
You are not booking a date. You are reserving a slot around your due date, on the understanding that it will move. Any newborn photographer who insists on a fixed date months out has not thought about how babies work.

Why five to fourteen days
In the first two weeks babies still sleep deeply for long stretches and retain the curled position they held before birth. That combination is what makes the quiet, sleeping newborn photographs achievable without any coaxing - the baby simply settles into it.
From around two to three weeks that begins to change. Babies become more alert, straighten out, and are more likely to be awake through the session. Nothing goes wrong; the photographs just become different ones.
There is also a practical argument for the early window. At ten days old a baby is portable, sleeps through most things, and has not yet developed the evening unsettledness that many families meet in week three. The session is easier for everyone, including you.
None of this is a deadline. It is simply the window in which one particular kind of photograph is easiest, and it is worth knowing so the decision is yours rather than accidental.
Holding a date
How the due-date window actually works
When you book, we pencil a period rather than a day - typically a stretch either side of your due date. Nothing is fixed, and you are not committed to a date you might not be able to keep. The flexible window is Orchestration at work - step two of The FOCUS Method.
When your baby arrives, you let us know, and we confirm the session for a few days later. That call usually happens within twenty-four hours of the message, and the session lands where it needs to.
If you would rather not think about any of it for the first week, that is completely reasonable. Message us when you are ready, and we will work out what is still achievable.
When plans change
Early arrivals, late arrivals and slipped sessions
Early arrivals are the most common change and the easiest to absorb. The window simply starts sooner, and if your baby has spent time in hospital we wait until you are home and settled - that is a decision for you and your clinical team, not for a photographer.
Late arrivals are equally straightforward. The window moves back, and nothing is lost.
If everyone is unwell, the session moves. A newborn shoot is one of the few appointments where rescheduling is unambiguously right, and nobody should feel awkward about asking.
And if the window passes entirely - it happens, particularly with a first baby - we photograph what is in front of us. A three-week-old awake in their parent’s arms makes a photograph worth having.
Older babies
What changes after the first few weeks
Between three weeks and about three months babies are awake more, focus on faces, and are increasingly interested in what is going on. Sessions become more about connection than posing, with more of you in the frame.
From around three months, when babies can hold their heads up and have usually found a smile, sessions change again and become genuinely interactive. Different photographs, equally worth having.
If you have missed the newborn window and are wondering whether it is worth booking at all, it is. The photographs will not look like the ones that made you want a session, but they will look like your baby at the age they actually were.

How long is a newborn session?
From 1.5 to 4.5 hours in the studio, or one to four hours at home. Sessions run long deliberately so feeding and settling are part of the plan.
How much does a newborn session cost?

Should we book studio or at home before the birth?
You can decide later. Families often think they want one and change their mind once the baby is here, and that is fine.
Do we pay when we book?
A booking secures the window and the balance is settled before the session.
What if we want a sibling in the photographs?
Say so when you book. Sessions with siblings are planned differently, with the older child photographed first while their patience lasts.
When will we receive our photographs?
A private proofing gallery arrives within two to four days, and your hand-edited images follow within two to four weeks of your selection.
