THE STUDIO ADVANTAGE

Why choose a studio maternity photoshoot

A maternity studio photoshoot gives you something a location can never promise - complete control. Inside our London hire studio the light, temperature and mood stay exactly as we set them, so the whole session feels calm, private and unhurried from the first frame to the last.

Light shaped entirely around you

Indoor maternity photography is built on soft, directional light. We sculpt it around your bump for flattering poses that feel natural and comfortable, and that controlled setting means every one of your maternity portraits shares the same timeless, editorial finish.

A private, relaxed atmosphere

The room is private and beautifully lit, so you can move between looks and poses without leaving it. The relaxed atmosphere puts even camera-shy parents at ease - the simplest way to come home with beautiful images you will frame for life.

FOR EVERY STAGE

Your pregnancy photoshoot, your way

Whether you book early or in your final weeks, a pregnancy photoshoot in the studio adapts to where you are in the journey. Indoors, we can pause, restyle and try fresh ideas without weather, crowds or fading daylight cutting the session short.

Posing that feels like you

From quiet, contemplative portraits to bold silhouette work, we shape each session around your personality and family story. Your pregnancy photos can stay classic and understated, or lean cinematic and dramatic - the direction is always yours.

Partners, children and family keepsakes

Your pregnancy photoshoot welcomes your partner and older children too, documenting the weeks before your newborn arrives and turning the morning into a family portrait session as much as a maternity one. You leave with a curated gallery you will return to long after the baby is here - and many families come back for a newborn photoshoot in the same room. Printed portraits become keepsakes your family can treasure for generations.

WHAT’S INCLUDED

What your session includes - and who is in the room

Every studio session is led start to finish by Joy, your maternity photographer, behind the camera, with Annie directing the styling and the posing, so you are never left guessing. We will happily advise on outfits and colours that photograph best - just bring a few options you feel great in.

Soft, natural-light styling

We light the room to feel like soft, natural light, then guide you through flattering poses that suit your stage of pregnancy and your comfort on the day. Before the session, you receive a what-to-wear guide to help you feel confident.

A relaxed, unhurried atmosphere

There is no rush. Most studio sessions are unhurried, with time for outfit changes and breaks. The relaxed atmosphere, gentle music and warm room create an enjoyable experience that helps you feel comfortable and present, so we capture the special moments and timeless images that matter most.

PLANNING YOUR VISIT

Planning your studio session

Our London hire studio is private, warm and easy to reach - families travel to us from central London and every part of the city. Arrive within your due date window and we will handle everything else.

What to bring

You are welcome to bring anything meaningful - a scan photo, your partner, older children, and the outfits you would love to be photographed in. We are happy to advise on colours and fabrics that work beautifully on camera.

After your session

You’ll receive a private proofing gallery within a few days to choose your favourites; your hand-finished images are then delivered within two to four weeks of your selection, ready to print, frame and treasure for life.

Studio session FAQ

Do I get a 3D virtual gallery with my session?

Yes - every Opus Lumière session of two hours or more includes The Growing Gallery, a private, password-protected 3D gallery of your finished photographs that you walk through and share with family. It is free for two years and gains a floor with every shoot. One-hour and 1.5-hour sessions don’t include it.

When should I book?

Between 28 and 36 weeks is ideal - the bump is defined and you’re still comfortable. Twins or medical considerations? We’ll bring it forward.

What should I wear?

Fitted dresses and flowing fabrics photograph beautifully. We’ll guide you on what to wear, so styling is one less thing to worry about - see our photoshoot ideas.

Can my partner or children join?

Absolutely - see couples maternity. We love capturing the connection between you.

I’ve never been photographed - is that ok?

Completely. We direct every moment and build confidence gradually, starting simple. You’re in safe, experienced hands.

How is a studio maternity photoshoot different from an outdoor session?

A maternity studio photoshoot removes every variable - weather, light and crowds. You get a clean, consistent backdrop and a calm, private room, so the focus stays entirely on you and your bump; an outdoor maternity session trades that control for parks, sky and golden-hour light.

When should I book my pregnancy studio photoshoot?

Most parents book between 28 and 36 weeks, when the bump is beautifully defined. Because it is indoors, the session runs to plan whatever the weather, and we will gladly bring your date forward for twins or medical considerations.

What should I wear to the maternity shoot studio?

Bring your own outfits - fitted pieces and flowing fabrics both photograph beautifully. We do not provide gowns, but we will happily advise on colours and styles so your maternity portraits feel completely you.

Can I have both colour and black-and-white studio pregnancy photos?

Absolutely. Your final gallery includes a mix of colour and timeless black-and-white, and every frame is hand-finished.

Is 20 weeks too early for maternity photos?

Usually, yes - at 20 weeks most bumps are only just showing, so the pictures read as a portrait rather than a maternity portrait. The perfect time is 28 to 36 weeks; book after your 20-week scan and we will hold a date in that window.

How late is too late for maternity photos?

There is no hard cut-off. After 36 weeks, standing and changing outfits gets tiring and babies do not always wait, so we suggest booking by 36 weeks; if you are further along, tell us and we will keep the session short, seated where you need it, and hold a nearby date.
