The right location does half the work.
Families often choose a location for how it looks in other people’s photographs, which is the least useful reason to choose one. What actually matters is how far it is from your front door, how much room the children have to run, and where the light falls at the time of day you can realistically get everyone out of the house. This guide runs through our favourite London locations for family photoshoots - the spots we come back to - and what each one is genuinely good for.

Choosing
How to choose a family photoshoot location
Start with distance. A location for family photographs twenty minutes away that you arrive at calmly beats a spectacular one an hour away that you arrive at frazzled, and with young children this single factor decides more sessions than any other.
Then think about what the children need to do. Some children settle when they have a hundred metres of open grass to run at; others do better in an enclosed corner where the world is smaller. You know which yours are, and it is worth saying so when we plan.
Light comes third, not first. Almost all the parks in London photograph well in the soft hours near the start and end of the day, so the question is less which park has the best light and more which park you can actually reach at that hour.
Finally, think about what you want to remember. A park you walk to every Sunday will mean more in ten years than a landmark you visited once for the photographs - any family photographer will tell you the same.

The parks
The best London parks for family photography: Hampstead Heath, Hyde Park, Greenwich and Kensington Gardens
Hampstead Heath - the least manicured of the big spaces, with long grass, woodland edges and views back over the city. It suits families with older children who want to walk, and it photographs beautifully in autumn - a favourite for family portraits.
Kensington Gardens - formal and calm on the west side of Hyde Park, with the Italian Gardens, the Round Pond and long tree-lined walks. Great with a pushchair, and one of the prettiest central London backdrops in late spring.
Hyde Park and, ten minutes’ walk on, St James’s Park - central and easy to reach from almost anywhere, with water, avenues and open lawns in a small radius. The most practical choice when the family is arriving from several directions; St James’s Park adds the lake, the pelicans and Buckingham Palace at the end of the frame.
Greenwich Park - the view down over the river to Canary Wharf is the reason to come - iconic London in one frame - and the slope gives natural separation between foreground and background. Best earlier in the day before the hill fills up.
Battersea Park - compact and varied, it offers riverside, gardens and open grass all within a few minutes of each other, which makes it forgiving with small children and easy with a pushchair.
Primrose Hill - a short session location rather than a long one. Walk up, use the skyline, walk down. With toddlers that is often exactly the right amount of park.
Regent’s Park - formal gardens and long tree-lined paths, and the most reliably pretty of the central parks in late spring and summer.
Victoria Park - the best of east London’s green spaces, with water, open lawns and a relaxed feel. Convenient if you are coming from the east and would rather not cross the city.
Beyond the parks
Riverside, streets and staying indoors
The Thames path gives a different character entirely - water, bridges and a sense of the city that parks deliberately keep out; Tower Bridge at first light is the classic London photoshoot backdrop. It suits families with older children and photographs particularly well in the last hour of light.
London’s streets and markets are an option too - great places for energy and movement - though they are harder work with young children and better suited to families who want that rather than calm.
And not every family session belongs outdoors. For family photoshoots in London in the wetter months, or when the children are very small, photographing at home removes the journey entirely, and the studio removes the weather. Neither is a fallback - for some families they are the better choice from the start.
Practicalities
Weather, crowds, seasons and planning
On weather: bright midday sun is the hardest light for family photography, and light cloud is the easiest. A forecast that looks disappointing often produces the better gallery.
On crowds: every London park is quiet early and busy by mid-morning at weekends. If you can manage an early start, you get the space to yourselves and the best light in the same hour.
On seasons: spring gives blossom and fresh green, autumn gives colour and low light, and winter gives bare structure and, occasionally, the best photographs of the year. Summer is the busiest and the least forgiving for light. Whichever season you choose, it is worth planning what to wear for a family photoshoot around the light and the temperature.
On planning: tell us where you would like to shoot when we plan the session and we take care of the practicalities, so the day itself is just a walk in the park.

Family photoshoot location FAQ
Do I get a 3D virtual gallery with my session?
Yes - every Opus Lumière session of two hours or more includes The Growing Gallery, a private, password-protected 3D gallery of your finished photographs that you walk through and share with family. It is free for two years and gains a floor with every shoot. One-hour and 1.5-hour sessions don’t include it.
Can we use more than one location?
Yes, on a two-hour session or longer. We plan a route so the walking is part of the session rather than an interruption.
Can you photograph somewhere that means something to us?
Almost always, and it usually produces better photographs than a location chosen for how it looks. Tell us the place you love and we will work out the practicalities.
What should we wear outdoors?
A simple palette of two or three colours, layers for the weather, and shoes everyone can walk in. We advise before the day.
Are the parks accessible with a pushchair?
Battersea Park, Hyde Park and Regent’s Park are the easiest. Hampstead Heath and Greenwich Park have significant slopes and rougher paths.
How far in advance should we book?
A few weeks for most of the year, longer for autumn weekends, which are the busiest for outdoor family sessions.
What if we cannot decide?
Tell us where you live and how old the children are, and we will suggest two or three that fit.
What are the most photogenic places in London?
For families, the ones that give you space and soft light rather than a queue: Hampstead Heath’s long grass and skyline, Greenwich Park’s view over the river, Kensington Gardens in blossom, the Thames path at Tower Bridge before the crowds, and St James’s Park with Buckingham Palace behind the lake. The most photogenic place is still the one you can reach calmly with children in tow.
